Legit Law · 23 October 2026 · 2 min read

Foreigners staying in Türkiye longer than their visa or visa-free period need a residence permit (ikamet). Applications start online through the e-ikamet system, followed by an appointment at the migration office.
Short-term residence permit
The most common permit for people who want to live in Türkiye — for property owners, those setting up a business, tourism and other purposes. Issued for up to two years at a time. Property-based applications currently require a property of at least USD 200,000 in metropolitan cities such as Istanbul.
Family residence permit
For the spouse and children of a Turkish citizen, or of a foreigner holding a valid residence or work permit.
Student residence permit
For students enrolled at Turkish universities and schools.
Long-term residence permit
Available after eight years of continuous legal residence, giving more stability without regular renewals.
What applicants usually prepare
- Valid passport and biometric photos
- Proof of address (for example a notarised rental contract or title deed)
- Health insurance valid in Türkiye
- Purpose-specific documents for the permit type
