Legal Advice in Turkey for Foreigners: When You Need a Lawyer and How It Works

Türkiye's legal system is codified and procedural. Deadlines are strict, many documents must be in Turkish, and authorities expect forms, translations and certifications in a precise format. For foreigners, that is usually where problems start — not in the law itself, but in the procedure around it.

When foreigners most often need a lawyer in Türkiye - Before buying property, to check the title deed, encumbrances, permits and the contract before any deposit is paid. - When setting up a company, to choose the right structure for banking, tax and residence plans. - When signing commercial contracts, leases, employment or shareholder agreements governed by Turkish law. - When a residence or work permit application is refused, or a deportation or entry-ban issue arises. - In inheritance, family or civil disputes involving assets in Türkiye. - When documents issued abroad must be translated, notarised or apostilled for a Turkish authority.

Can I get legal advice without speaking Turkish? Yes. A good adviser explains your position, your documents and every step in a language you understand, and prepares the Turkish-language filings for you. You should never sign a Turkish document you have not had explained.

Do I need to be in Türkiye? Often not. Many matters can be handled remotely with a power of attorney, signed either at a Turkish notary or abroad at a Turkish consulate or local notary with the required legalization. Keep the power of attorney as narrow as the matter allows.

What a first consultation should give you - A clear picture of the legal questions that actually matter in your situation. - Your realistic options, with the risks and documents each requires. - What the next step involves and how long it usually takes. - A written scope and fee proposal before any work starts.

Documents worth preparing - Passport, and residence permit if you have one. - Any contract, title deed, notice or decision you have received. - A short written timeline of what has happened so far. - Your Turkish tax number, if you already have one.
